When is re-piping your home plumbing a necessity?

Not all pipe leaks are the same. Small or big, it should be looked at by a team member of Harvey Baker Plumbing to ensure that a bigger problem does not arise in the future.

Small pin hole leaks from copper piping usually means that the piping walls are getting thin from decades of use from the Central Florida water suppliers and local wells, if you have one. Our water in the city of Orlando is treated well by most utilities, but over time, pipes become worn and need to be replaced.

You might think that having a leak in one of your plumping pipes means replacing your pumping system. Most times, a professional plumber can fix a simple leak in one of your pipes with a single visit. There might other times that would require all of the pipes in your home to be replaced. This process is known as re-piping a house.

Here are some of the reasons when re-piping would be the best option:

– Older Home: If your older home has never replaced its pipes, there’s a good chance that you’ll need to have it done. Why? Older homes typically have galvanized or old clay pipes installed. These types of pipes can burst and corrode as they age.

– Low water pressure: If water is not coming out of your faucets very fast it could be a result of your pipes filling up with rust or minerals. This is an indicator your pipes are old and should be replaced soon.

– Red or brown water: This can be caused by rust from your older pipes breaking off into your home’s water system. This is what is turning your tap water red or brown. You should consider re-piping as soon as possible because now your water quality is affected.

– Multiple pipe leaks: If you are experiencing pipe leaks regularly your plumbing a professional should evaluate system. They are to determine if the entire system should be re-piped

Re-Piping a House FAQ:

What is repiping a home?

A repipe is when it is time in your home to replace the existing copper or galvanized pipes that are already there and replace with new hot and cold water pipes.

How long does a repiping project take?

A typical repipe is broken down into three parts. The repiping part will take 1 to 2 days depending on the size of your home. After we get a permit from the city to do the work, there will be a city inspection, this is part two. Part three is the patching of all drywall holes made to install the new piping in your home.
Overall expect 3 to 5 days total, again, depending on the size of your home. Our estimator will provide you with more details during your free estimate.

Harvey Baker makes sure our staff covers floors, kitchens, furniture, and all other belongings to keep clean up to a minimum.

What options do we have when it comes to the type of plumbing materials being used?

We use these high quality and dependable materials to ensure that this repipe will be your last. Both Type L copper and Uponor brand PEX-a plastic tubing are materials that provide an excellent result.  Some homeowners are more comfortable with copper, while others prefer the advantages that PEX can provide. They are both backed by our warranty. Our estimator can provide more details during your free estimate.

Will we have to leave our homes during a repipe?

You do not have to leave the home because not every room will be worked in but there will be a construction going on. You can stay at home or take the opportunity to do some errands or visit a friend. By the end of the first day, there will be water available in at least one bathroom for you to use overnight.
